MARCH REPORT: Brandon take upper hand in Coventry League

Brandon 46, Earlsdon 44, Coventry 42, Bretford 40. Coventry League Round 1, April 1st 2014. 

Brandon ran out victorious in the first round of the revamped Coventry League in an afternoonfull of thrills and spills – not to mention to close scoreline.

Led by Kyle Roberts, Brandon took the early advantage in the meeting – which was held over a sixteen heat formula. Each team fielded 4 riders and 1 reserve, with each of the main bodied riders programmed to have four rides.

By time each rider completed one of their four programmed rides, Brandon held the narrow advantage over Coventry and Bretford with Earlsdon on the least points with 8. However, three consecutive third places, followed by an 8 point joker win for Daniel Drewett, brought the Devils back into the equation with 22 points as Coventry now led with 23 – thanks to the unbeaten Mason Phillips.

A couple of back to back heat wins for Earlsdon left them holding the advantage, however Kyle Roberts won his teams joker ride to leave Brandon nursing a one point advantage over Coventry, closely followed by Earlsdon with Bretford bringing up the rear.

Any side could still win the meeting with just four heats remaining. Despite being five points behind, Bretford clawed their way back into contention of winning with a win followed up by a second in heats 13 & 14 as Coventry and Brandon were tied at the top of the standings on 39 points a piece. Daniel Drewett’s win in heat 15 meant they moved onto 40 points-  just one behind Brandon (41) and one ahead of Coventry (40) and Bretford on 39.

In the last race of the afternoon, Brandon’s Kyle Roberts took victory to earn his side the victory. Ollie Morris impressed throughout the afternoon to finish second – meaning Earlsdon finished 2nd overall – Coventry

Mason Phillips was the rider of the day scoring an unbeaten 20 points from his four rides, including one tactical joker heat win. Jason Cleaver also impressed on the day as did previously mentioned Ollie Morris. The next Coventry League meeting takes place at Bretford on Thursday April 24th at 6:30pm. managed to finish 3rd and Bretford 4th.
