NEWS: Girl racer Bailie is the champ

A girl cycle racer from Rugby won her biggest ever race last weekend – and Bailie Phillips left all the boys in her wake in a major regional competition.

Bailie, from Bilton in the town, won the third round of the Under 12s British Junior & Youth Cycle Speedway league at the Brandon Road, Bretford, Playing Fields track last Saturday afternoon.

With the temperatures rising to the mid-20s, Bailie set a hot pace on the track. She won all her qualifying heats in fine style before heading home three male competitors, including Rugby rider and team mate Jack Bayliss, to win the final.

The 12 year old Harris School pupil has only been riding for one full year and now races for the Coventry Devlins Newsagents team. She has followed older brother Mason into Cycle Speedway racing – where the racing bikes have no brakes!

She now moves on to the next regional round at Wolverhampton track Wednesfield. She is already assured of progressing to the national rounds of the British Junior & Youth League, set to be held at four venues later in the year.
