MATCH REPORT: Aces debut new signings in strong win

Wednesfield Aces 95 – 81 Newport, Elite League, Sunday 1st June 2014

Wednesfield Aces brought in a couple of their 2014 season signings for their debut outings in the first team.

Heat one saw the Aces’ Ricki Johnson, fresh from his recent back to back success in retaining his British U19 title, paired with former under 19 champ Ben Mould. A lack of communication from the home side meant the scores were split 5/5 after heat 1.

Heat 2 was all action, the Aces look for a 7-3, but contact between Aris and Rudman resulted in a 5-5.

Heat 3 took a while. Carmicheal ended up on the green going into first turn from the start, the rerun saw Evans for the visitors back in the pits for a tapes infringement. In the third re-run an incredible gate from grid 4 saw Heard take the lead and heat win 6-3, also in this race was Mark Winwood making his first team debut for the Aces. Progressive scores 16-13.

Heat 4 and Newport got a break. The Aces’ Matt Smith got excluded at the tapes leaving Mould with Hibbert and Groves. Another rerun in heat 4. Hibbert turns right in the first bend. All 3 called back. Pure strength from Mould sees off Hibbert followed by Groves who eats shale, 4-5 Aces hold a 2 point lead.

Heat 5 and we saw Domnick Rycharski in an Aces race top for the first time this season. Ball kept his bike wide and Johnson behind him for 3rd place. Rychardski took the win 5-5.

Heat 6 and the tapes caught Rudman across the helmet! In the re-run, Smith and Heard dominate 7-3. Progressive scores 32-26.

The balance shifted in heat 7, Evans & Carmichael 3-7. Mould falls and Johnson takes 3rd.

Heat 8 all shared. Aris won from Ball, Hibbert and Jewkes.

Heat 9 Rycharski pulls out another Polish masterclass to win the race, the scores again split 5-5. Half time and the scores were 45-43.

In heat 10, Rudman was getting a bit a familiar with the start tapes over his helmet. Rerun of heat 10, Rycharski gets another heat paired with Heard against Newport’s Sidwick and Rudman.

Heat 11, a captains job and class team riding from Chris Jewkes brings Aris from the back to the lead for a superb 7-3.

5-5 in heat 12. Mould and Johnson tripped over the race leader and swapped places.

Winwood rounds Ball for a third place but the ref Mr Mike Hack stops the race and excludes Winwood after Ball falls heavily. Heat 13 was rerun 4-5 to Newport.

Normal service resumes for the Aces in heat 14. Jewkes and Smith take the 7-3. Progressive scores 75-62.

Heat 15 6-4. Aris from Carmichael.

Heat 16. Cracking team show from Hibbert getting Sidwick through, but had no legs to carry it out, resulting in a 5-5.

Aces’ Matt Smith given his marching orders from the tapes in heat 17, finishing in an advantage to Newport with the 7 points going to the visitors.

Going into heat 18, the Aces carry a 10 point lead. Aris and Heard get away, Ball chases for little over a lap before running out of puff.

Final scores 95-81 to the Aces.
