PREVIEW: Coventry stage British Vets Final

Coventry Devlins Newsagents Cycle Speedway club stage their biggest meeting of the season this afternoon (Saturday 14th June) at Hearsall Common when they present the 2014 British Veterans Final. The final starts at 2pm.

Twelve of the country’s top veterans stars will be in action. A new winner will be crowned after mutli champion and last years victor, Londoner Denis Hubble, retired from racing.

Edinburgh`s Lee Lawrence, last year’s number two, will line-up as the favourite. Birmingham`s stylish Paul Timms, and Exeter ace Dave Murphy, will also be strong championship contenders.

Home hopes will rest on Joe McLaughlin, who finished fourth in 2013, and who is currently lying in second place in the Eurovets Grand Prix series. He has now almost completely recovered from illness and injury and is likely to mount a stern challenge.

The British Veterans Final will be followed by a supporting Midlands V North veteran’s test match. Coventry based racers Norman Venson, who rides for Leicester, and Devlins Newsagents skipper Dave Frith, are named in the Midlands team.

Turning to junior action, Coventry Devlins Newsagents travel to Leicester on Sunday (June 15th) for Midland League division 2 and division 3 fixtures and junior manager Andy Drewett is expected to field several of their newest recruits.

Coventry and Leicester will be back in track action this Tuesday evening at Hearsall Common (17th June), when the two teams meet in return Midland League junior fixtures, starting at 7.15pm.

In a classic encounter at Hearsall Common last Sunday afternoon, Coventry again just fell short in the final stages, going down 86-94 to old rivals Birmingham in an enthralling Midland League clash.
