MATCH REPORT: Horspath put the hammer down at Newport

Newport 80 – 93 Horspath, Elite League, Sunday 15th June 2014

Newport Cycle Speedway Club took on the powerful Horspath Hammers in the Elite League fixture at Newport Sports Village, which resulted in a well earned 93 to 80 points win for the Oxford team to keep their 100% record intact.

The home team made a poor start, receiving 4 exclusions in the first 5 races, but bounced back in heat 7 with a Hibberd/Soper maximum, and a heat 10 first and second from Bozejewicz/Groves to get back to just 8 behind. However Horspath, with Grabowski and Kolata in superb second half form restored a more comfortable 12 point lead.

The racing was very entertaining for the sun-drenched crowd, and Newport, although down were certainly not out and came back again in heat 15 through the impressive Carmichael and Groves, but it proved not to be enough against the strong visitors. A fine Grabowski/Timms maximum sealed the points for Horspath.

Mark Carmichael beat holder Chris Timms in the Elite League match race title.
