NEWS: Entertaining racing at Hethersett

Hethersett Hawks/Swinton & Co staged a top-of-the table clash when unbeaten leaders Ipswich Whirlwinds came to the Memorial Playing Field to face second-placed Hawks in the South-East League. It turned out to be one of the most entertaining and action-packed matches with the Indian summer weather making the track dry and dusty. With Ipswich arriving a rider short and there being six exclusions – five for Hethersett – only a third of the races had four finishers.

Fifteen penalty points were added to the Ipswich score at the end as the Hawks tracked one restricted rider over the permitted three but the match itself saw the score swing backwards and forwards throughout as Hethersett gained an advantage only to make mistakes allowing the visitors back in. Nick Myhill and Dan Chambers led the attack well and David Adams produced some spirited attacking racing and some clever teamwork. Going into the last race Hethersett were leading 80-78 excluding the penalty and looked set for a 5-5 draw in the finale until Leon Mower dived under both Hethersett riders on the pits corner. Hethersett now have to win their remaining three matches to ensure runners-up spot in the League.
