COMPETITION: And the winner of the Yale CCTV Kit is…

Derek Benyon!

Yale’s marketing team has chosen Derek’s story below as the winner of the CCTV Kit.

January ’64 – My 1st match of the Manchester “Winter League” for new teams and riders. My team, Hopwood Tigers, pedalled 8 miles to Openshaw Monarchs (who had riders that had tasted junior recing in the previous summer.) Knew it was a mistake when the Openshaw riders laughed at our cow horns and 24 tooth rear sprockets. We were hammered 37 – 11 but I must have got a 2nd ‘cos I scored 5 from 4 rides. Johnny Watchman scored 7 but no max, so someone finished in front of him It was a long sad ride home (By late February at ours, I scored 10 and Johnny scored 6 – I was a fast learner!)

Congratulations Derek! There are some runners up too, all of whom will receive a goody bag from Yale also.

The Midlands company commented, “The Yale marketing team have picked one winner who will receive the CCTV kit, it is Derek Benyon. His story of cycling 16 miles round trip for a Manchester winter league fixture in January 1964 showed real commitment to wanting to race.

Because the stories were so passionately written and also showed the great memories that people had of their first time racing cycle speedway bikes, we have also picked four runner prizes, who will each received a Yale goodie bag.

They are; Paul Graham, James Varnish, Chris Parish and Mick Aris.

Finally, we had great fun reading all the stories and it shows how the love of Cycle Speedway is still real even after all these years.”

All the winners need to contact Lauren Hodgkiss at Yale on Lauren.hodgkiss@yale.co.uk who will despatch all the prizes this week.
