NEWS: Birmingham vets victorious in double success

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway riders Bob Prince and Mark Windwood (pictured by Paul Devine) enjoyed a memorable day in the first round of the 2015 Eurovets GP series at Swindon, last Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs pair scooped a double success in the prestigious championships. Prince, the reigning British vets champion, raced to victory in the Over 50s final in fine style at the Wiltshire venue.

Winwood was in dominant mood as he made easy work of his five qualifying races to score a 20 point maximum, securing the favourable inside starting position in the resulting `A` final.

The robust 41 tear old then shot from the gate to take the chequered flag in his Over 40s `A` final. Winwood is the defending champion, having run away with the championships last year.

And, to complete a memorable day for the Monarchs, Prince also won the Over 60s final to complete an impressive personal double success.

Steve Hodgkinson was also to the fore in the Over 50s classification, just missing out on the final, whilst all the Monarchs club were delighted to see popular clubman Paul Timms make a successful return following knee surgery.

The Monarchs demolished Wednesfield Dragons 109-70 at Perry Hall Playing Fields last Sunday afternoon in the Midland League Division 1. They welcomed back Scott Millward for his first appearance of the season as the Monarchs won as they pleased.

Chris Timms and Matt Smith raced unbeaten for the Monarchs, with Ricky Johnston supporting well, as the Monarchs all round strength swept the ever trying Wednesfield team aside.

Birmingham point scorers: Matt Smith 19, Mark Winwood 17, Scott Millward 17, Ricky Johnston 16, Chris Timms 15, Nathan Groves 13, Ewan Hancock 6 and Carl Winwood 6.

The Birmingham club will next be in action this Saturday (16th May) in the British Junior & Youth League at Hearsall Common, Coventry, starting at 12 mid day.
