NEWS: Birmingham to stage biggest ever meeting

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway club have announced plans for their biggest ever meeting in the sports history in Birmingham.

The Cycle Speedway World Championships races into Birmingham on Saturday 8th August, with the Monarchs proudly staging the semi finals of the championships at their Perry Hall Playing Fields base.

The Birmingham club, the oldest Cycle Speedway club in the world, will be pulling out all the stops to welcome scores of international competitors and overseas visitors to the city. Club management have been working on extensive plans since last year.

Club bosses have already confirmed major facility infrastructure will be brought in to stage the event. Portable changing rooms, mobile toilets and a temporary water supply will all for especially hire-in for this major international event.

Semi final elimination rounds will be staged at the Perry Hall track at 10am and 12 midday on 8th August. The action then swings to the Wolverhampton area for further international events later in the day, before the World Final is staged at Ashmore Park, Wednesfield, on Sunday 9th August.

It’s expected that Monarchs huge array of top international riders will be in action in the World Championships, including the dashing Ricky Johnson, new signing Matt Smith and club kingpin Chris Timms.

The Monarchs excel at veteran level and several of their senior riders will also compete in the World Veterans Final, set for Leicester on Friday 7th August, staged as part of the fiesta of world class Cycle Speedway action in the Midlands in the first week of August.

Bob Prince, Mark Winwood, Steve Hodgkinson, Paul Timms and Phil Widdas are all expected to wear the Monarchs red, black and white racing attire in the veteran’s championship, with Winwood the best bet for gold medal glory.

The Monarchs are next in action this Saturday (6th June) in the Midlands regional round 4 of the British Junior & Youth League at the East Park track in Wolverhampton.

Turning to senior team racing, Monarchs travel to Coventry this coming Tuesday (9th June) in the Midlands League division 2 at the Hearsall Common track on the western outskirts of the Godiva city. Racing commences at 7.15pm.

The Birmingham club continue their new `come and try it` evenings every Thursday throughout the summer at Perry Hall, from 6pm. Youngsters can just turn-up and have a free go at the fast and exciting sport of Cycle Speedway, supervised by expert coach Bob Prince.
