NEWS: Wednesfield secure Sport England grant

Wednesfield Aces have been awarded £6,284 worth of funding by Sport England, this news was broken to 33/18 News by club president, Paul Bodley.

Bodley commented, “We are delighted that Sport England have invested in the future of our Club. The awards will cover the costs of coaching courses, new bikes, travel costs and winter indoor training.”

Paul went on to say that he believed this was the first award of its kind to a Cycle Speedway club coming from the Small Grants programme that help smaller clubs to develop and grow.

He continued, “The application was submitted on behalf of the club and I would like to thank British Cycling Regional Manager Nick Yarworth for all his help during the submission process, this is a funding programme that can be open to most clubs and I urge clubs to make an application.

“The development of our club is the responsibility of the clubs committee and the benefits we can gain from this funding will enable mainly the junior side of the Club to recruit and keep lots more kids. I hope this will empower other Clubs to gain this funding, I do know that at present Nick is also helping East Park with their application and we take this opportunity to wish them good fortune. Come on Midland clubs, help is there from British Cycling.”

It is excellent news for Wednesfield. New Elite League clubs Coventry and Birmingham are also required to become a Go-Ride registered club as part of their Elite League entry conditions, which also opens them up for this funding.

This pro-active “best practice” model demonstrated by the likes of Wednesfield, Sheffield, Poole, Bury and Ipswich, plus others, should certainly be the aim for all Cycle Speedway clubs.

In other Wednesfield news, the Aces host their AGM this Sunday 31st January at Gilberts Bar at 2pm.
