LETTERS: 50 years of Tyneside CS

Les Gustafson has written in to inform us of another 50th anniversary taking place tomorrow:

Reading the item about Heathersett’s 50th, reminded me that tomorrow (Saturday 23rd), is 50 years to the day since the first recorded Tyneside Test Match took place by the seafront in South Shields. The second leg took place two weeks later at the Newcastle track next to Brough Park Stadium.

Three of the members of that Newcastle side are still very active in the Northumbria club’s activities at Cramlington – Keith Dyer,  Jim Smith and Norman Carson – although more off-track these days, visited occasionally by Keith Thompson who was the top scorer for South Shields in those matches (and overall top scorer as well).

While yours truly does his best to get round to tracks reachable from London,  but writes more than rides these days.

Should anyone be interested to read a bit more, the Newcastle History website has all the details (and more): http://www.newcastlecyclespeedway.co.uk
