RIDER NEWS: Hookway up for “Ride of the Year”

Exeter’s European and British Women’s champion, Lauren Hookway is flying the flag for Cycle Speedway in British Cycling’s “Ride of the Year”, where she is up against the likes of Olympian Jason Kenny.

Hookway faces tough competition against some huge names in cycling, but her success of being crowned European champion at Poole this year was noticed by the top brass at British Cycling.

On the BC website, British Cycling president, Bob Howden, said: “British cyclists have enjoyed an incredible 2016 and narrowing the list of contenders down to 12 has been an incredibly tough decision. The success enjoyed by our riders across all the disciplines is something that everyone who supports cycling in the UK can be incredibly proud of.

“Every candidate on the list has enjoyed some incredible moments over the last year and would all be worthy winners.”

Last year, World Champion Vicky Brown and the Men’s GB Ashes squad were nominated for the award. In the end, British Cycling fans voted Lizzie Armitstead’s stunning UCI Road World Championships win as their 2015 Ride of the Year.

It’s a real achievement for Lauren to be shortlisted, especially in an Olympic/Paralympic year.
