CLUB NEWS: Aces have successful pre-season

Wednesfield Aces kicked off their pre-season with a win over Swindon Robins at the Oasis Leisure Centre, securing victory by 84-96.

Topping the score chart was Aces legend, Lee Aris, with a maximum and was backed up strongly by team partner Brandon Whetton with 18pts. If it wasn’t for a fall in his second race, then Paul Heard would of scored maximum points, but still ended the day with 17pts.

The pairing of Matt Smith and captain Chris Jewkes contributed well, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. Completing the team was three of Wednesfield’s youngest squad members Alex Aris, Tyler Bould, and making his debut in a Wednesfield shirt, Josh Whetton, who gave their best efforts for the team.

Swindon, who were sporting their eye-catching and brand new 33/18 Designs race jerseys, put a good competitive team out and credit should go to them for preparing a good track to ride on. It was a good day all round.

Wednesfield Aces completed their pre season weekend with an away win over Newport 66-108 on Sunday. Newport, who fielded 7 riders, were up against it, as the Aces turned the screw and added the pressure the more the match went on, aided by maximums from Lee Aris and Brandon Whetton.

Paul Heard and Lee Kemp went through the afternoon dropping just the 1 point, while Matt Smith once again had a good match scoring 16+2.

Aces once again fielded the youngsters Tyler Bould and Josh Whetton, who both gave 100% for their team. The line up was complete with Phil Hemming, who was by far the oldest rider in the pits, but being surrounded by these youngsters did not phase him and his experience showed and scored a very good 8+2 from 3 rides.

Credit must go to both sets of riders and the track staff at Newport for making this friendly happen in terrible conditions. The Wednesfield team and management would like to thank Swindon and Newport for this weekend and now look forward to the new season.
