CLUB NEWS: Monarchs look forward to Spring Cup

The Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway club are getting prepared for a busy 2017 season, which kicks off this weekend with the ‘Spring Cup’ competition.

This is a 4 round series with the 1st round this Sunday at the Wednesfield track in Ashmore Park, culminating with the 4th and final round at the Birmingham track on Sunday 9th April.

The competition is a 5 man team event aimed primarily for the top riders from each club taking part. The competition is the brainchild of Cycle Speedway legend Roger Ellis.

Monarchs number one and world number two, Chris Timms, is still recovering from knee surgery so is unlikely to be part of the Birmingham side, which seriously weakens the Monarchs’ on track chances.

Scott Millward and Ricki Johnson are likely to lead the side, with Ewan Hancox the under 17 rider representative. Rider availability will be key to Birmingham’s chances in the competition.

This year, the Monarchs will be racing in the Midland league whilst also taking part in a South West/Midlands cross over league, which virtually doubles Birmingham’s racing programme for 2017.

Birmingham have added two new signings to the team this year for the battles ahead. Luke Draisey and Russ Evans. Draisey joins us from East Park and will add much needed strength to the heat leaders. Evans is retuning to the sport after an absence, who was previously associated with the now defunct Sandwell club.

Track work continues ahead of the Monarchs’ first match in April, with the weather proving very difficult this year so far, so a lot of work lies ahead in the coming month!
