2017 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS: Day one summary

It was an excellent first day of racing in Newport yesterday, Sheffield, Ipswich, Exeter and Poole were the winners at the Olympic Sports Village.

The new Little League championships opened up the day and it was smiles all round, especially from Poole, their “Poole 1” team taking victory. Coventry’s unbeaten Ronnie Wassall won a run run off against Exeter’s JJ Wildman to take second, Poole 2 finished fourth, followed by Kesgrave and Newport.

The U12s final brought another win for the South West and Wales region, Exeter this time finishing on top, ahead of Kesgrave, Newport and Poole.

Another different team took the U14s title, Ipswich showing their strength on their way to victory, Poole took second this time, with Wednesfield in third and Birmingham fourth.

The Junior competition closed an exciting day of racing and it took another run off to decide the title. This time Sheffield’s Adam Watson held firm off inside grids against Wednesfield’s Brandon Whetton to take the Junior title back to the Steel City, 10 years after their last club title in the same competition.

Ipswich secured third place ahead of Poole with Newport taking the final spot.

Four different winners on day one and plenty more action to come from this great competition. Today, the racing moves down to Poole, where U16 Girls, Over 40s and Women’s take to the track.
