MATCH REPORT: Whetton and Buet Gannon take inaugural Joy Guy Memorial titles

34 youngsters (22 U16 and 12 U10s) took part in the inaugural Joe Guy Memorial in memory of the youngster who lost his life last month in tragic circumstances.

His parents, Steve and Angie, along with Rachel and his brother Craig were in attendance to present the trophies, along with a Shield they have provided for the under 16 category. All trophies were supplied by Olympic Transport Logistics.

First up were the Under 10s with an age range of 7-10. Birmingham’s Charlie Buet Gannon was unbeaten to take the title and his first winning trophy. Three riders tied on 13 points that required a run off.

Leicester’s Liam Wells took victory and was well earned, a fall whilst leading his opening ride meant that he rightfully took runner up spot on the day. Coventry’s Joseph Augustus was 2nd in the run off to finish 3rd on the day, Joseph beating his team mate Lewis Fry in that run off.

U10s podium

In the Under 16s,  the line up featured riders 11-16. Two riders raced unbeaten in the heats to force a run off for the title.  Wednesfield’s Josh Whetton took advantage of grid 1 to lead home Coventry’s Cameron Gill, who was on his back wheel throughout. Josh using all his experience of the East Park track to take victory.

Two riders also tied on 15 to see another run off for the final rostrum place. Wednesfield rider Tyler Bould drew gate 2 that gave him the advantage over home rider Ben Ferguson. Ben chased with Tyler proving to have the extra speed.

Right behind those riders, four riders fell just short of the podium on 14 points. Out of the younger riders on the day, it was Leicester’s Kyle Wells and Birmingham’s Connor Steel  (both under 12) that impressed with 12 points each, however Astley and Tyldesley’s 11 year old, John White, impressed on 14.

Of the 3 girls who took part it was Birmingham youngster Bekah Humphries who top scored on 8.
