CLUB NEWS: Monarchs race for Individual Glory

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway riders have been concentrating on individual racing whilst the weather has decimated all league racing up to last weekend.

With the meeting against Wednesfield postponed due to heavy rain the weekend before, there has still been no team action this season so far for the Monarchs.

It was the opening round of the British Youth and Junior league (BYJL) on Saturday at Wednesfield, with Birmingham riders competing in their age categories.

Ewan Hancox dominated the U18s with an unbeaten performance including the A final win. Also taking part in that category were Billy Winwood (B final), Jake Steel (C) and Ryan Winwood (D).

Connor Steel had to settle for 2nd spot in the U12s A final, after initially leading the first running of the race.

Bekah Humphries also made the A final and slipped to 4th after the chequered flag. Charlie Buet Gannon made an impressive debut in the U12s but missed on the A final.

Birmingham had 2 representatives in the U8s competition, with Samuel Price impressing taking 3rd place in the A final. His determined efforts winning the crowd over.

Issy Buet Gannon made the B final and finished 4th. She was very much on the pace though.

The previous Saturday saw the opening round of the Eurovets competition in Manchester. Mark Winwood continued his impressive start to the season by top scoring in the 40’s category on 19 points and taking the A final win.

Meanwhile, Paul Timms came 4th in the 50s and also 2nd in the 60s. Both will be looking to stay in contention for another title stab in 2018.

The Monarchs will be hoping it’s 4th time lucky, as they travel to Coventry on Sunday for what they hope will be their opening team fixture with a Midland League fixture.

Juniors start at 1pm, with senior team action at 2PM.
