MATCH REPORT: Four winners for Birmingham in Midland Riders Championships

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway Club hosted the Midland Riders Championships on Sunday, with all categories in a day full of racing.

The senior event was won by Monarchs’ own Nathan Groves, who took the title on 15 points. Chris Timms missed out on a rostrum place after moving at the start in a run off for podium places. Chris Jewkes of Wednesfield came 2nd with Coventry rider Mike Baldock in 3rd.

The veterans title was won by home man Mark Winwood, whilst Paul Timms finished 4th on 12 points. In the U18s the title went to another home rider, Ewan Hancox, whilst Jake Steel finished on 6 points.

Connor Steel took victory in the U12s, with his team partner Charlie Buet Gannon in 2nd. Connor also came 3rd in the U15s to show he is back on track after his injury lay off. Ryan Winwood finished 2nd in the U15’s, the event won by Wednesfield youngster Tyler Bould.

In the Womens event, Rebekah Humphries finished 3rd, that title was won by Leicester’s Chloe Whitehead.

The previous Sunday an under strength Monarchs team took ML1 victory by a narrow 91 -88. Chris Timms raced to a full 20 point maximum. However the 2nd and 3rd division teams fell to defeat. For the juniors, who badly missed Charlie Buet Gannon it was their first defeat of the season.

MIDLAND LEAGUE DIVISION TWO

BIRMINGHAM 60 (65 – 5 penalty points) – Jake Steel 14(5), Billy Winwood 14(5), Josh Hill 12+1(5), Ryan Winwood 11(5), Rhys Winwood 11(5), Natalie Timms 6(5) V Leicester 68 (82 – 14 penalty points).

MIDLAND LEAGUE DIVISION THREE

BIRMINGHAM 34 – Bekah Humphries 11+2(4), Connor Steel 10+1(4), Samuel Price 9(4), Issa Buet Gannon 3(3), Varni Chawla 1(1) v Leicester 46

There is no further action in July for the Monarchs as riders prepare for the European championships in Poland at the end of the month.

Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday, U16s 6PM, seniors 7PM. All abilities welcome.
