CLUB NEWS: Understrength Monarchs come close to sensational victory

The Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway Club nearly pulled off a shock win at Wednesfield on Sunday in the Regional Play Off final with only the victors progressing to the Play off final in 2 weeks time in Poole.
The Monarchs were missing 2 key 1st team members but took advantage of several tape
exclusions for the home side as pressured mounted, the Monarchs moving 5 up after the
interval.
However the Aces aren’t league champions for nothing and had to dig deep to pull themselves back into contention and sealed victory with a race to spare.
Birmingham can take huge credit for a strong performance and a 2 point loss on the day was no disgrace, Coventry were always in touching distance whilst Leicester were tailed off in 4th.

REGIONAL PLAY OFF FINAL
Wednesfield 94, BIRMINGHAM 92 – Ewan Hancox 16(4), Ricki Johnson 15(4), Chris Timms 15(4), Carl Winwood 1(4), Mark Winwood 10(4), Paul Timms 10(4), Luke Draisey 7(3), Steve Hodgkinson 5(3), Jake Steel 3(2). Coventry 85, Leicester 44.

With August being a barren month for team racing Monarch riders were in individual racing with some taking titles.
Chris Timms was crowned British Cycling Elite GP riders Series champion at Poole on Saturday, despite finishing second on the day. This was one of the most prestigious titles this year. Also on Saturday the Eurovets series was in Wednesfield with both Mark Winwood and Paul Timms having great days. Mark is right in the running for the title this year.
Last weekend was the final round of the YJL for the juniors. Sam Price finished 7th in the U8’s and finished 6th in the National rankings. Issy Buet Gannon had her best performance in the competition but missed out on a final place and a ranking.
Charlie Buet Gannon was 4th in the B final and finished 7th overall in his first year in the the U12’s, still a great achievement.
The British individual championships took place over the August bank holiday. Both Chris Timms and Ricki Johnson made the senior final, whilst both Mark Winwood (40’s) and Paul Timms (60’s) finished 3rd in their finals. Carl Winwood was 5th in the 40’s.
In the U12’s Connor Steel finished 4th with Charlie in 10th, whilst Bekah Humphries was 5th in the girls.
Birmingham finished 3rd in the Open Club Championships with Great Blakenham taking the title.
This Wednesday (12TH) the Monarchs are guests of Birmingham Speedway as we take part in some demonstration races , something the club is very proud of to be involved.
Training continues every Tuesday and Thursday, U16’s 6PM, seniors 7PM. All abilities welcome.
