MATCH REPORT: Newport suffer second defeat of the season

Newport hosted the Horspath Hammers on Sunday, and unfortunately fell to a second league defeat of the season.

Newport opened with a 6-4 advantage with the fast-starting Dan Bock racing away to a win with his partner Mark Carmichael, 2 more 6-4’s were to come Newport’s way in the first half, with Horspath taking 7-3’s in Heats 3 and 5 and the remainder of the opening 10 being 5-5 drawn heats. Horspath entered the break leading by 4 points.

The second half of the match went in Horspath’s direction as they pulled to a 13 point lead before the nominated heats , but two more advantages followed by three 5-5’s closed the match at Newport 112 Horspath 135.

Newport welcomed Sean Bennett back to the side, Sean looked like he hadn’t been away as he raced to 11+1 from 5 rides including an exclusion for movement at the start of heat 13. The home sides Sam Marsh was also a victim of movement as heat 19 was called back at his expense.

Scorers in the top half of the Newport side was Callum Goward with 14 points from 5 rides against Horspath’s Lukas Nowacki with 19+1 and ending the day unbeaten by a home rider.

The Juniors section saw Sam Marsh (10+1 from 5) and Ben Truscott (11+1 from 4) return to the side once again and debuts were handed to Callum Hiscox (16 from 5) and Finlay Niblett (7 from 4). Kacey James scored 3 points from her two rides at reserve.
