OBITUARY: Ronnie Young

33/18 News has learnt that former Hampden rider Ronnie Young passed away on Tuesday 4th January. Here’s how his death was reported by Doug Nicolson on Facebook’s I was (or still am) a Cycle Speedway rider:

“Hugely saddened to post that Hampden’s Ronnie Young passed away today after a brave battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma. One of the founder members of Hampden Hawks, he rode for Glasgow in the Manchester 21st Anniversary weekend in 1969, a year when he would surely have got a rostrum placing in the Glasgow Riders Championship but for a broken wrist. He subsequently rode in that years KO Cup final with it in plaster, something debated at some length at Control Board meetings that winter!
“He played a pivotal role in re establishing the sport in the mid 70s , filling team manager, steward, league chairman and office bearer roles.
“Will miss him hugely and his humorous recall of the many incidents of this era. Time passed quickly when he was in your company. It was a privilege being your friend Ronnie.”

Condolences go out to Ronnie’s family and friends at this time
