MATCH REPORT: Yorkshire League Round 5

Report by Rob Mawhood

Hull took a huge step to retaining the Yorkshire League title with victory in Round 5 at Cookson Park on 27th July.
All the teams could field full strength sides, and there were seven riders racing who will be in action at the Euro’s.
Dariusz Pilas won heat one, under tremendous pressure from Lewis Foxley. Nathan Everett made sure of a drawn heat by keeping Kyle Holland in last.
Hull took the lead with a 6-4 in heat 2, Jack Lister holding out Darren Kent while David Cooper overcame a 10 metre handicap, for movement at the tapes, to take third place. Hull took a big advantage in heat 4 as Lewis Foxley and Jack Lister took a 7-3 over Laura Watson and Dariusz Pilas. Sheffield fell further behind Hull in heat 6 as they shared a drawn heat with Heckmondwike. The Saints pairing of Pat Beacock and Dan Green held a 7-3 for one lap before Kyle Holland rode between the pair to take the lead. Beacock though withstood all of Laura Watson’s passing moves.
Heat 7 was full of action as the Hull pair of Lister and Foxley led from the tapes. A great move by Burton took him past the pair on the back straight. Lister and Foxley now had to contend with Pilas in last place. The pressure the Sheffield was putting on saw Foxley fall after clipping the back wheel of his team mate. The remaining team races saw both Hull and Sheffield take maximum 7 points in races against luckless Heckmondwike. Heat 10 broke the mould as the race ended shared between Sheffield and Hull, Burton doing superbly to keep Foxley in last place (the Hull rider trying every trick in the book to get an opening to pass). Hull led by three as the match entered the individual races. Hull and Sheffield winning two races each to leave the final scores Sheffield 59, Hull 62 and Heckmondwike 35.
