MATCH REPORT: European Championships Day 1 at A&T

Day 1 of the European Cycle Speedway Championships threw up some hard fought action on a damp and grippy track at Astley & Tyldesley today.
The day’s highlight was undoubtedly Dawid Bas’ win over the current European Open Champion, Marcin Szymanski, in heat 8 of Open Quarter Final 2, in a new track record time of 40.04 seconds. This shaved 0.04 seconds off the record held by Andy Angell, set five years ago. Both Szymanski and Bas went close in later races, with times of 40.06 and 40.09 seconds respectively.
This race was Szymanski’s only defeat of the day, as he cruised through Veterans Semi-Final 1 with a 20 points maximum score, and topped the scorers in Open Quarter Final 2 , with 19 points, one point ahead of Bas.
