MATCH REPORT: Unstoppable Roberts wins again

Emerging Cycle Speedway starlet Kyle Roberts (pictured left) is fast building up an ‘unstoppable’ reputation after storming to a second unbeaten maximum in just 10 days as the 15 year old scooped the Coventry Under 17 invitational final, sponsored by Galaxy Seating.

Held at a rain swept Hearsall Common, under new portable floodlights, on Tuesday evening, Roberts mastered the tricky conditions to record his fourth straight successive maximum at his home Earlsdon track.

The main challenge for the Kenilworth schoolboy came in the shape of Rugby based racer Mason Phillips. The pair clashed in heat 1 with Phillips positioned on grid 2 whilst Roberts would have to overhaul his fellow 15 year old racer from grid 3.

A jet propelled start from Roberts earned him the drop on Phillips as the ‘Boy Wonder’ won from the gate. Four wins later and Roberts secured victory, though Daniel Drewett did give the 15 year old a scare on multiple occasions as they enjoyed a terrific tussle in heat 11.

Phillips also won his remaining four rides meaning he secured himself second position whilst Daniel Drewett picked up third place. Ewan Hancox finished fourth after a number of impressive passes throughout his five rides.

Matt Hambridge was unlucky not to score more points than he did whilst Shaun Reynolds returned to the saddle after a near 6 week break and totalled 14 points. Sammie Marsh won the girls award, cementing her position as one of the top junior riders in the sport.

The Galaxy Seating sponsored Under 17 final brought down the curtain on yet another tremendous season of Cycle Speedway racing at Hearsall Common. Since Coventry’s sensational revival in 2011, they have successfully recruited a whole host of youthful talent, many currently enjoying national success.
