MATCH REPORT: Successful opener at Birmingham in Midlands BYJL round one

The Midlands BYJL got underway with a well supported round at Birmingham.

The U8 result was the same as last year, with a win for Wednesfield’s Boyd Haines, but whereas in 2015 he was the sole competitor this time there were nine riders. Two of the debutants showed their family Cycle Speedway pedigree with Autumn Smith (Myke Grimes) taking 3rd in the A final and Sophie Ball (Jamie Ball) winning the B final. A special mention goes to Kylan Bould who took a heavy fall but picked himself up and went out for his last race.

Connor Steele may have won the U10’s yet again, but he had to work hard for it with Leicester’s Kyle Wells, Birmingham’s Dylan Hawtin and Coventry’s Wyatt Jacobs putting up a great display both in the heats and the A final. This age group looks like it’s going to be very competitive.

In the U12’s Coventry’s much improved Jack Reynolds put together a perfect set of rides to take the win after moving up an age group. Second place went to the impressive Sophie Sinclair-Black, with the Wednesfield pair of Todd Rowley and Megan Burt taking the minor places.

Ben Wells may be regretting using his first pick to choose gate 2 in the U14’s A final, as Jimmy Wassall took full advantage of that gate to take the win with Tyler Bould third and Josh Whetton fourth.

Someone who didn’t benefit from gate one was Brandon Whetton who moved at the tapes. The U17’s win went to teammate Haydn Rowley, with home rider Ewan Hancox fighting off Jake White for second. A special mention goes to Josh Marsh who made a last minute decision to ride but still was a clear winner of the B final.

Leicester’s Lizzie Rigley won the girls after a touch of wheels caused leader Chloe Whitehead to lose her pedals. Sammi Marsh also took advantage of this to take second place with debutant Georgia Burt fourth.
