AUSTRALIA: Heavy rain cancels Australian meetings.
Words by Pete Barnes.
With the 2020 Australian season due to commence at the weekend thunderstorms and over 12 hours of rain on Friday cancelled out any option of racing at Le Fevere and Salisbury the following day. However on Sunday volunteers at Findon had prepared a near perfect circuit and combined with a nomination of 73 riders there followed close on 4 hours of competitive racing. The Open event saw Matt Gentle take the honours from a below par Bobby McMillan with Angus Freeman in a creditable third position. Despite the long Christmas holiday break Braylan MacDonald romped home in the Junior U15 category from Jackson Dobie and Aussie Jones. The Veteran events have grown in popularity since the commencement of the Grand Prix series and today saw 12 entrants that augers well for the World Championship later this year. Last, but by no means least, the women’s recruitment program devised by Australian manager and coach Tammy Harley yielded a robust result with newcomers soon showing their ability in the sport. Although returnee Nicole Kinross impressed with two heat wins it was World Champion Lucy Millikin who headed the final scorechart.
