MATCH REPORT: Newport complete League Double

Report by Colin Simmons

Just a couple of weeks after the first league meeting between the clubs for some years Newport CSC made the short journey up to Underwood to take on East Newport CSC in the return fixture, South Wales and Southwest league division 1. Newport took the spoils in the recent match on a very wet day at Velodrome park but were expecting a tough match this time around on the tight Underwood circuit. There was much joy among the riders and supporters when the weather remembered it was summer for one day at least. However, the expectations of the home team were dampened slightly by the late withdrawal of two riders leaving them short of heat leaders. This was clear to see as Newport got off to a flying start with Ben Mould, Lee Galley and Callum Goward taking wins in the early heats. The pattern continued as the home side struggled to hold their inside gate positions throughout the match and Newport, the reigning league champions built a commanding lead that gave them the opportunity to hand some first team experience to Ellie George and Esmae Lewis, both of whom did very well to beat much more experienced opponents and helped their side to a convincing 73 – 105 victory.

East Newport: Neil Power 14+1, Jamielea Waters 5, Matt Davies 11+2, Colin Wildy 9, Morgan Porter 14+1, Tom Alexander 7, James Bailey 13+3.

Newport: Chris Davies 15+1, Ben Mould 19+1, Lee Galley 20, Dan Bock 13+1, Callum Goward 18+2, Adam Bennett 11+2, Esmae Lewis 4, Ellie George 5+1.
