33/18 News has learnt the very sad news of the death of John Murphy at the age of 81. John was the recipient of the Wilkinson Sword award in 2007 and last rode for Ireland in the 2024 Over 40’s Home International at Leicester 6 months after celebrating his 80th birthday
Here’s how the Edinburgh club broke the news on their Facebook page:
“Today were heard the very sad news of Edinburgh cycle speedway legend Johnny Murphy passing away.
“The “Master” had an incredible history in the sport, racing in the 1962 world final at Harrison Park, Edinburgh and had hoped to still compete in this year’s event.
“Fittingly Johnny won his last ever competitive race in the 1st ever Scottish National Championships at Fife last year.
“The Falcons send our condolences to Johnny’s family & many friends from all over the world.”
Ireland finished 3rd in the Over 40’s World Cup Final at Ipswich on Sunday 14th September and Steve Copping, Ireland team manager, and the rest of the Ireland team dedicate this to him and his family
