MATCH REPORT: Heckmondwike getting back on the right track

The Heckmondwike team saw them come up against two teams in one day on Sunday, with the first team Edinburgh descending on the firth park track.

Heckmondwike almost had a full team with just two riders missing from the line up, but with Heckmondwike’s Pawel Idziorek back on the track and Jake wood making a welcome return to the sport after eight months off, it certainly made for a thrilling match.

Heat 1 saw Edinburgh’s Mark Lee excluded from his first race of the day after getting tangled with Heckmondwike’s Richard Wells, with Lee ending up landing on the track and having to be given first aid. Heckmondwike managed to maintain a lead up till heat 11 with the team scoring well in each heat, heat 12 saw the home side drop three points and by the final heat Edinburgh had kept their lead and managed to win the match by 3 points.

Heckmondwike scorers – Darren Kent 18+1, Richard Wells 9,  Pawel Idziorek 19+1 , Laura Watson 5, Adam Watson 10+4 , Jake Wood 12, Will Naylor DNR, Tom Whitwam DNR.

In the under  13’s Heckmondwike fielded a total of 7 riders against only 1 Edinburgh rider, although Edinburgh’s Kieren Swanson scored a max 16 points with 4 races the Heckmondwike juniors took the match due to the number of riders.

Match two of the day saw Manchester team Astley and Tyldesley up against the Heckmondwike team. With track temperatures soaring and a few tired bodies, Heckmondwike managed to stay out in front till heat 12. By heat 13 the scores where level at 65 each, with heat 15 the decider to see if it was going to be a draw, the Manchester outfit managed to clinch it by only 2 points.

Heckmondwike scorers – Darren Kent 14, Richard Wells 7, Pawel Idziorek 20, Laura Watson 5, Adam Watson 12+3, Jake Wood 16+1

In the under 13’s Astley fielded 9 riders against Heckmondwike’s team of 7. With Heckmondwike’s Tom Whitwam having an impressive race and scoring a maximum 16 points out of four rides. Despite the soaring heat the juniors put on some excellent racing, with Astley winning the match at the end.

Heckmondwike proved their worth with a great team effort and showed they can be up there with the best of them, lets hope the effort continues for the team who now seem to be heading on the right track.
