MATCH REPORT: Stars sign off with commanding win in Newport
Newport Cycle Speedway went down by 81 to 95 against Sheffield Stars in an entertaining encounter at Newport’s Sports Village, with plenty of good home grown talent on show from both teams.
The Stars, racing their last Elite League fixture for the foreseeable future, started well, winning 4 of the first 5 heats, looking at home on the big Welsh raceway. Newport kept the score close with some heat advantages and drawn heats to go into the inteval 9 points down.
Sheffield kept ahead in the second half with their strong heat leaders, Angell, Parr, Hewitson and Grimes to the fore, but Newport kept it close with Evans, Carmichael and Herbert impressing and preventing Sheffield from inflicting further damage to the scoreline.
The Stars had more depth to their team, which enabled a comfortable 14 point win in the end. Stars skipper, Gavin Parr signed off his Sheffield career with a fine 20 point maximum, along with Mikey Hewitson pulling in his best return yet.
Andy Angell was unlucky to have a heavy fall in his final ride, which saw him fail to finish, whilst Grimes was only beaten once by an opposing rider. Grimes’s Coventry team mate, Mason Phillips showed his potential with a strong 14 supporting haul.
