MATCH REPORT: Hawks end Blakenham’s unbeaten run

Hethersett Hawks/Myhill Decorators got back to winning ways with a near-perfect victory over previously unbeaten South East League leaders Great Blakenham at the Memorial Playing Field.

A strong first race win 7-3 from Scott Grimes and Dan Chambers set the scene. Blakenham were without their talisman Australian Cody Chadwick, off racing in Poland, and lost former Hawk Richie Williamson with a hip injury after a tussle with strong-riding Olly Buxton.

Hethersett used good tactical awareness to build their lead despite a maximum from Lewis Osborne. In fact the visitiors’ only race victory came in the final heat.

The Hawks’ “B” team made it a double victory thanks to maximums from Buxton, Grimes and Dan Butler and a couple of gutsy rides from veteran Roger Carter. Other highlight was a victory fro Carly Cameron in heat 12, shepherded home by Butler.

The previous day Hethersett held a number of events to celebrate their Golden jubilee and welcomed back ex-riders for some action, many of whom showed they still had the ability such as Dave Martin and Ben Collins.

Earlier a junior event saw age group victories for Dan knights (Under-19) Harrison Bacon (Under-16) Giles Awbery (Under-13) Leo Mallett (Under-10) and Lewis Fierro (Under-8) in his first competitive match.

Proceedings ended with the Breckland Autos Charity Cup which went to the wire with Ash Hill of Ipswich just completing his maximum on the line in heat 18 against runner-up team mate Richie Fellgett. Hethersett’s Dan Chambers completed the podium places with 18 points.

The Hawks face a difficult next League match away to champions Ipswich Whirlwinds on June 5th.
