CLUB NEWS: Stars riders claim 3 wins in opening BYJL/SEGP round
The opening regional round of the British Youth & Junior League, which also counted for the opening round of the South-East Grand Prix, saw 9 Norwich riders take part and 3 of them emerged victorious.
Frank Spauls set the ball rolling with a 16 point maximum in the Under 10’s event before going on to win the A Final. Will Blackmore & Zachary Eastwood rode in the Under 12’s event where Will scored 13 points and finished 4th in the A Final and Zachary scored 9 points, making the B Final where he finished 4th. Shaun Kell rode in the Under 14’s event, scoring 14 points losing only to Kesgrave’s Ryker Jolly twice in the heats and then finishing 2nd behind Jolly in the A Final.
The Under 16, Under 18 and Girls categories were raced as one before they separated for their finals. Tom Blackmore was the only Under 18 rider present and he scored 14 points in the heats, dropping his only points to the Under 16 winner Mason Martin from Hethersett. Josie Kell scored 9 points in the heats before claiming 2nd place in the Girls A Final
The Seniors and Veterans also raced together for their heats before separating for the finals. Jamie Medler scored 11 points in the heats before finishing 3rd in the Senior A Final. Paddy Wenn scored a maximum 16 points in the heats and Rory Freeman scored 10 which saw both qualify for the Veterans A Final with Paddy winning and Rory finishing 3rd.
The following day should have seen 4 matches against Kesgrave with 2 South-East Youth League matches as well as matches in Divisions 1 & 2 but only the Youth League match against the Kesgrave Panthers took place and this saw Norwich defeated by 85 points to 68. Shaun scored a maximum 24 points from 6 races, Will scored 17, Josie 11, Zachary 9 and Tabby Nierop 7. The South-East Division 1 & 2 matches as well as the Youth League match against the Kesgrave Pumas were postponed due to Kesgrave not being able to raise teams for those matches which are scheduled to be re-staged on October 16th
Norwich’s next team action is scheduled for Sunday May 8th when Great Blakenham are the visitors in South-East Division 1,2 and the Youth League although before that the opening 2 rounds of the EuroVets will take place on Saturday April 16th & 30th which will feature Paddy. Steve Copping will miss the Horspath round but is expected to make the trip to Wednesfield. The following Saturday sees the 2nd BYJL/SEGP round take place at Whitton Sports Centre, Ipswich
