CLUB NEWS: Hawks in Indoor action

HETERSETT HAWKS / YELLOW BRICK MORTGAGES had three riders in action at the British Indoor Championships held in Coventry over the January 7th / 8th weekend.

Lola Martin rode well for her first time doing indoor events and she was the youngest person riding in the mixed under-14 Championship. In her five rides she had a second place and two third places to finish with nine points in 13th place. She also raced in the Women’s Regional team event for the South East scoring four points and as the racing went on she gained in confidence.

The Hawks” top teenager Mason Martin came second in his first race in the Under-16s but was unlucky to slip off in his second race. He finished with seven points in 10th place.

Dave Martin came through qualifying heats to make the Over-40 Final. After a tough first race he should have won his second only for an opponent to fall as they were approaching the line. He finally got that elusive win in his third race followed by a second place but slipped off in his final outing to finish on 10 points. This was good enough for joint 8th place so with a bit more luck he could have been closer to the podium. That is the nature of indoor racing – on the compact circuit things happen quickly and it can be a lottery if you are not in front.

In the same event Rory Freeman, who will be joining the Hawks after the transfer window, scored seven points. More details on the outdoor season should emerge after this weekend’s South-East AGM with the Hawks looking to be back on track on March 4th.
