MATCH REPORT: Northern 4’s Round 1

Report by Andy Schofield
Hull staged the opening North & Scotland fixture of the season with The first round of the Northern Fours & Grand Prix. The Northern Fours was closely contested on a cold showery day at Hessle and reigning champions Sheffield were joined by Bury and Astley & Tyldesley with Hull a point back after the first set of races. At the interval the three visiting sides had pulled clear to tie on 24 points, and with one set of races to go Sheffield held a narrow lead over their nearest competitors. In the final set of races Sheffield made sure with Pawel Idziorek winning his last race and Bury finished a point behind despite winning three of their final four races with Astley & Tyldesley’s chances hampered as John White and Hull’s Noah Lyon locked bikes while disputing the lead. Hull’s young side finished a creditable fourth and Heckmondwike, missing referee Darren Kent, and an understrength Stockport side also battled hard for points. Reece Pollitt of Bury raced unbeaten while Sheffield’s Pawel Idziorek only dropped one point and Astley & Tyldesley’s Frank White and Hull’s Jack Lister were also on top form.
