MATCH REPORT: Whirlwinds set up Hawks clash for the title

In this eagerly awaited clash between two of the big guns in the South East league,
it didn’t quite live up to the billing. It turned out to be a one sided affair, with the Whirlwinds totally dominating from start to finish and were in no mood to give any early Christmas presents to their younger counterparts.

In a display of fierce team riding, they handed out a lesson in all departments. To be fair, the Eagles were missing their talisman in Charlie Rumbold, who wasn’t available due to work commitments, and may have kept the score a little tighter, but even Charlie might not have been able to stop the juggernaut in its tracks.

Straight from the off the Whirlwinds set out their intentions. After a shared heat in one, they reeled off three 7-3s and a 7-2 after Ashley Hill was excluded for bringing down Brooke. In fact the Eagles’s only success came in heat seven when Chittock was excluded from the start and recorded a 6-3.

Ben Harvey of the Whirlwinds was the star of the night scoring 19+1 from five rides after being replaced in one of them and was only headed by team mate Brooke in his opening heat. Brooke himself also returned the same scorecard, Leon Mower looked sharp and looked very impressive with 18+4. He gave a master class in how to pass, has he did all too often for the Eagles likening. Ashley Hill and Alex Harvey carried the fight to their opposition and on another night would have scored more.

We now roll on to October 11th, when Whirlwinds are at home to Hethersett in their last match of the season, knowing a win will lift the title once again, and in this form the Norfolk team will have their work cut out holding them at bay, as they surely now have the bit well and firmly between their teeth.

This Sunday sees the two Ipswich teams unite as they head down to Poole for the last Elite fixture of the season, hoping to finish on a high and in the process secure fourth spot, in what at times has been a difficult season.
