INTERNATIONAL: History in the making

Words and photos by Pete Barnes

The weekend just gone (September 21st & 22nd) wass the 30th anniversary of the Poole Clubs historic journey to Poland. Officials were Pete Barnes and Graham Sutton and five teenage riders,Steve and Kevin Lowman,Donna and Russell Cooper and Tom Harris. Pete Kerley and his son Tom from Norwich also joined the party.

The 2000 mile road trip was undertaken in a hired mini bus funded by the British Cycle Speedway Council. The two meetings in Rawicz drew huge crowds,on the second day close to four figures, to witness the first foreign competitors to race on Polish soil.

The visit became a truly international event as Johan Koudijs and Tom Van Haren of the Almere Club in Holland joined in the weekend activities.
