NEWS: Norfolk clubs press on

Norfolk Cycle Speedway Clubs are pressing on with their plans to promote and develop the sport in the County. A second meeting held recently at the Harford Centre finalised plans for the season’s activities on the track as well as many promotional activities.

The Wednesday racing, that has been the cornerstone of local racing in recent years, has been dropped. Instead the Clubs aim to make use of Elite League Sundays hoping that there will be more interest. No Norfolk riders currently compete regularly in the Elite League and South East Grand Prix Series has been moved to Saturdays so the dates are free for the current members.

The Norfolk Championships will now be staged on one day with pre-entry so that a proper timetable can be published. They will be held at the well-located Eaton Park track on Sunday June 28th from 1 p.m.

Four Go-Ride events will be held, one on each of the four tracks, with a view to provide a variety of different racing for the Clubs’ youngsters as well as a recruitment opportunity. Also each of the four tracks will stage a Practice / Demonstration event, probably in a four-a-side format, again to attract newcomers.

All Norfolk Clubs will have events at schools in their locality but the main promotional activity will be in one week in July. On Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd the sport will have a presence at the Norfolk Show in conjunction with Active Norfolk. Then on Friday 3rd cycle speedway will have its own set of races at the Gas Hill Gasp organised by British Cycling Eastern Region. This hill climb had previously had riders Danny Zagni and Tim Snook feature prominently but it will be the first time cycle speedway bikes will be used. Then on Saturday 4th the sport will be part of the parade for the Lord Mayor’s Procession in Norwich, a major local event.

All of these activities should generate interest in the sport that the Clubs hope to capitalise on. A further meeting will be held in early May.
