NEWS: Brandon Bees in Junior League action

Newly formed Brandon Bees Cycle Speedway team are next in action this Tuesday evening (2nd June), when they go to near neighbours Coventry in the Coventry Junior League, round 4.

The match takes place at the super banked Hearsall Common track, in Earlsdon, Coventry. Brandon will take on 4 rider teams from hosts Coventry, Leicester and Birmingham. The first race is at 7.15pm.

The Coventry Junior League, which used to have over 30 teams in its 1950s heyday, has been revived to cater for the increased local demand in Cycle Speedway, fuelled by the national boom in cycling and recent Olympic success.

Six teams compete in the present day version. In addition to Brandon, Coventry, Leicester and Birmingham, former team names from the past, Warwick Royals and Earlsdon Hammers, make-up the league.

Racing takes place at four tracks and is primarily aimed at junior riders aged under 18, therefore attracting new juniors and increasing participation. The league is sponsored by Cycle Coventry.

Brandon are expected to be led by fast improving local Warwickshire rider Matt Hambidge. The 17 year old was in fine form in the Bees opening Midland League Division 2 match at Brandon Road Playing Fields two weeks ago.

The Brandon Bees name has been revived from the former Brandon team of the same name, who rode in the 1970s in the car park track at Coventry Speedway Stadium. Officials hope this will help promote the new Cycle Speedway club.

The next home match at Brandon Road Playing Fields is on Tuesday 16th June, when the Bees play host to Birmingham in the Midland League division 2.
