MATCH REPORT: Midlands and East on top in Women’s League

Hethersett Hawks / Swinton & Co staged the second round of the British Women & Girls League and, despite a cold, breezy and, at times, wet day, the competitors from as far afield as Exeter, Poole and Sheffield put on some tremendous racing – the morning rain ensuring almost a perfect racing surface.

In the Inter-Regional competition the leaders Midlands were again dominant, defeating the South & South West 72-48. Lauren Hookway won a couple of races but the Midlands, led by the Whitehead sisters, had impressive teamwork throughout not losing a heat.

The East team were boosted by a surprise cameo appearance from former star Tiffany Collins who paired up well with the other home rider Katie Adams. With the Lily Gedge / Chloe Pearce pairing in fine form and Charlie-Jane Herbert also winning two races they were far too good for a North team under full-strength. However, Vicky Brown was able to keep the score respectable (67-42) with a brilliant maximum.

The individual competition that followed provided even better racing as the riders were split into Senior and Intermediate categories. Charlie-Jane Herbert and Rebecca Davies both had heavy falls so missed out on the main final which was won after a strong gate from Michalle Whitehead chased all the way by Vicky Brown. Lauren Hookway held off Laura Watson to take the minor place on the rostrum.

The Intermediate went right to the chequered flag with Chloe Pearce making the best of a gate one draw to just hold off the impressive Macie Schmidt. Sammi Marsh won the battle against her Midlands team-mate Elizabeth Rigley to take third spot.

This Sunday the Hawks hope to continue their unbeaten South-East League campaign when East London visit the Memorial Playing Field (2pm).
