CLUB NEWS: Heckmondwike back on track

After two years on the sidelines, Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway Club is back and ready to compete against the best.

The revitalised team is to compete in the forthcoming ‘Northern Fours’ tournament against six other Northern teams . The competition starts on October 14th with the first round at Hull and runs through until November 11th with the final round at Astley & Tyldesley’s track in the North West.

The competition is made up of two mini leagues with promotion and relegation following each of the four rounds. With teams from highly rated clubs, Hull, Astley & Tyldesley, Bury, Stockport, Sheffield and Northumbria the competition is sure to be fierce but team manager, Justin Naylor believes the Heckmondwike racers can achieve success.

Justin explained, “We have been steadily increasing our ranks and attracting former riders to regular Saturday morning training sessions at the Firth Park track. We are now in a position where we can once again make an impact in regular competition. ”
Heckmondwike Cycle Speedway team is no stranger to success. In years gone by the team attained notoriety as one of the leading clubs in Great Britain. Along with several league championships, current team captain and England international, Darren Kent won many individual honours.

Following the loss of several key members two years ago, the club dropped out of regular competition. Since then Justin and Darren have worked hard to rebuild the team.

Training sessions are held each Saturday morning at 10.30am till 12.30pm from March to November at Firth Park Heckmondwike opp Morrisons petrol station . New members of any age are always welcome. The club can even provide bikes and equipment to help new riders get off to a good start.
