MATCH REPORT: Under strength Wednesfield lose by single point

Wednesfield Aces went to Coventry with a few riders missing to face a strong Birmingham side in the Gold Cup on Sunday. In a tight affair between these 2 was evident as the first 9 races were all 5-5 shared heats. Then a lucky break through came in the way of Birmingham in a action packed heat 11 as Lee Kemp & Jordan Holdcroft was leading Paul Heard & Mark Winwood only for the ref to blow his whistle and to of judged that Lee had legged Paul off on the last corner. The race was awarded as a 5-4 to Birmingham with Mark Winwood,who was awarded 3rd place in that same race, subsequently given a match ban after the race was completed. Birmingham stretched their lead further in heat 13 as young Ellis Richmond fell on the 1st bend and handed the monarchs a 7-3 heat win. With 7 heats to go the scores stood at 68-60 in Birmingham’s favour. Then in heat 15 Wednesfield hit back with a 6-4 only for the opposition to get one back in heat 16. In heat 18 with Mark Winwood not being able to take his place Paul Heard was on his own. Matt Smith then pulled off a super gate to get over on Paul then on the 2nd lap on the 1st bend Tom Bewick made fine pass on the inside for the ref once again to blow his whistle and to have Paul out for use of the leg resulting in a 7-0 to the Aces. The Aces felt they were back in the match but unfortunately it was to little to late as the Monarchs closed the meeting with two 5-5s to win the match by a single point.
