CLUB NEWS: Jacobs races to victory
Revived Brandon Bees Cycle Speedway club held their second meeting of the season last Sunday afternoon – and the local Cycle Speedway scene found a new star of the future in 10-year-old Wyatt Jacobs.
The club staged the Coventry Spring Junior Championship, for riders aged under 13. The event turned out to be immensely successful – well attended by local riders and supported by many parents who cheered on their off-springs.
The refurbished Bretford Playing Fields circuit, in Brandon Road, looked resplendent after months of hard work, led by ex Whoberley Witches rider Rob Hardie, supported by a team of volunteers.
Jacobs, who attends Sir John Fisher RC School in Wyken, was soon into his stride. He won several early races, overcoming the event handicapping system by consistently overtaking his rivals in fine style.
He then beat his great friend Jack Reynolds in the heats as both progressed to the final. They were joined by Jacob Slezek and Liam Jones, who both displayed their recent improvement.
In the grand final, Jacobs sprinted away from the ever pressing Reynolds to win his first ever meeting in fine fashion. Slezak took third, with the ever trying Jones in fourth.
There were several other notable performances but it was diminutive Alex Jones, the younger brother of Liam, who caught the eye with several entertaining rides from the back, often beating older opponents and providing terrific entertainment.
After the success of this event, further junior meetings are to be added to the Brandon fixture list, together with an early July staging of a senior individual meeting at the picturesque rural Warwickshire venue.
