PREVIEW: British Youth and Junior League national round 2 from Southampton

The second of this year’s BYJL National Rounds will be held this Saturday at Southampton starting at 10am.

The first round at Leicester provided plenty of good racing with over 100 youngsters taking part, with encouragingly 45 in the two youngest age groups.

In the U8s, it is the Poole duo of Scott Rowles and Max Parry who lead the way followed by Kesgrave’s Magnus Vincent.

In the U10s, A&T’s John White showed why he is highly rated with a faultless display, leading home Poole’s Joe Hurren and Sheffield’s Logan Perkins. In his first ever National round Birmingham’s Dylan Hawtin put in a very determined performance to take fourth place.

Kesgrave’s Oliver Wright was the winner of the U12s, with Poole’s Nathan Goulden second. What was very encouraging about this age group was the success of the girls, with Maddie Saunders taking third and both Emily Burgess and Sophie Sinclair-Black reaching the B Final. Indeed Emily probably had the day’s best race win during her qualifying races.

It was the North who dominated a very competitive U14s, with A&T’s Max Parry leading home the Stockport duo of Devon Campbell and Michael Preston, but fourth place Danny Byrne looked to have a fair turn of speed which he will be looking to put to advantage on a track he knows well.

Brandon Whetton lived up to his position as favourite for the U17s, but Ipswich’s Pierce Bacon made sure he had to work for the win. East Park’s Jake White can be happy with a good third place.

Some of the day’s most physical races came in the girls event when Leicester teammates Lizzie Rigley and Chloe Whitehead met each other, with honours even. Neither though could match the speed off the gate of Poole’s Macie Schmidt, who took the overall win.

In the team event 2015 winners Poole set about defending that title with a powerful performance and they have a clear lead ahead of Wednesfield and Kesgrave
