MATCH REPORT: Welsh Riders’ Championships

Newport cycle speedway club staged this years Welsh riders championships, with 52 riders competing over 5 age groups.

Heavy overnight rain meant it was an early start for the host club to get everything in top condition for the days racing.

21 under 10s took to the track and it was rapidly improving Kalem Martin winning for the home club after 5 fine wins.
The girls section saw Newport’s Isla Lewis take top spot on the podium.

The Vets meeting saw home favourite Lee Galley pass favourite Birmingham’s Mark Winwood to take the title.

The under 16s resulted in another home win with the speedy Sam Marsh winning his first Welsh title and team mate Esmae Lewis taking the girls event.

The racing was getting quicker on the drying track, and the large welsh crowd were being treated to some fine racing.
The under 13s event was won by Newports Luie Lewis, with Ipswich flyer Maisey Baker taking the spoils home to Suffolk in the girls.

The Open event produced some fine racing under the floodlights, and it was great to see both Welsh clubs out in force, as well as riders from Poole, Ipswich and Birmingham.

Newport’s long serving rider and British bronze medallist Mark Carmichael took the senior title with an untroubled maximum, with East Newport’s Jamie Lee Walters taking the Womens title.

All 52 riders showed that Wales have a great future ahead at international and club level.

Club guests for the day were GB and Wales track champion Rhian Edmunds, and representatives from Welsh Cycling.
