INDOOR 2016: Whitehead powers to victory in Women’s championship

Leicester Lucy Whitehead powered her way to victory after a run off with Ipswich’s Charlie Jane Herbert.

Both riders were in fine form and finished on 19 points apiece, forcing a run off for the title.

Whitehead powered into the lead from the outside grids, while Herbert gave chase on the Leicester rider’s back wheel.

Herbert dived up the inside of turn 3 at the end of lap two, making contact with Whitehead’s bike and coming down heavily and clearly in some pain after injuring her leg, which required lengthy first aid treatment.

Referee Bob Prince excluded Herbert for  ramming, leaving Whitehead to present herself at the tapes to claim the British title.

Exeter’s Lauren Hookway came third, recovering after hitting the air fence in heat 7.
