CLUB NEWS: Birmingham feel the vibe to keep fit

Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway Club are still waiting to kick off their 2018 season, after the two opening fixtures were postponed due to the adverse weather conditions, which left all tracks virtually unrideable. Last Sunday’s clash at Coventry going the same way as the previous trip to Leicester.

Whilst on track training has been limited this season so far, members of the club have linked up with Vibe Cycle instructor Gemma Moore at the Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr for some intense classes. Vibe Cycle is a fun, fast and lively form of cycling exercise that will ensure a good all round work out that is all set to the beat of music.

A spokesperson for the Monarchs club said: “It’s a pretty intense workout with lots of sprints, which is perfect for our sport, plus the body movements on the bike also ensure a good body workout too. The music is good and there is a great buzz and energy in the class”.

Meanwhile new signing Josh Hill is chomping at the bit to make his debut, he joins from East Park. Josh is a popular rider in the sport and is excited for a new challenge. The 25 year old spoke about the new season: “I’ve joined Birmingham for a new challenge this year, plus as Chris Timms is one of my favourites I’m looking forward to learning from him”.

Josh Hill leading (for East Park) with Monarchs Jake Steel and Billy Winwood chasing last season.

The Shropshire based rider started in the sport in 2000 with Sandwell is also a keen cyclocross rider, which has helped with his fitness, but is mad on anything with 2 wheels!

“I do like motor speedway too. When I get the chance to go and watch but I really enjoy competing in Cyclocross competitions. Hopefully this year I will do some good racing for Birmingham and maybe get picked to ride in the 1st team too.”

Josh was captain of the Wolves last season, and has twice been their rider of the season, but when we asked who his biggest inspiration was he had no hesitation. “My mom and dad inspire me, but besides Timms, I like Andy Angell as a rider, whilst in Cyclocross it’s Andy Jones”.

The Monarchs are next on track 1st April at home to current champions Wednesfield.
