After many youth and junior triumphs in the preceding years and becoming the youngest rider to be selected for the Poole first team, Martin became British Senior champion at Leicester in 1988 when he outpaced Andre Cross in a run-off to clinch the coveted trophy. He almost made it the double 12 months later at Thurrock, only losing out to Tim Snook in another title deciding race-off.

But it was in team competitions that Martin really excelled and he collected an impressive 6 British Team Cup winners medals at a time when Poole dominated the event. Noted for his devastating turn of speed and change of line, Martin won many admirers right across the cycle speedway world and his name, along with his late brother Ade will always be held in the highest esteem at Harbourside.
