CLUB NEWS: A busy spell for the Hawks

Report by Sarah Brailey

There is quite a lot of HETHERSETT HAWK sponsored by YELLOW BRICKMORTGAGES news to catch up on as they have been flying around the southeast! Saturday 8th June saw four of the youngsters make the 3.5 hour long trip down to Hellingly for R4 of the SE GP/BYJL, have about 10 minutes track time and makethe 3.5 hour trip back to Norfolk. Hellingly Lions, we salute you – you do this journey far more than we do! With the track looking good and the Hawks more used to the uphill start, spirits were high. Nyla seemed to shine here coming 3rd in the A final of the U10’s, whilst her brother, Luca came 3rd in the U12 A final. Austin and Arlo finished 2nd and 4th in the B final.

On Sunday 9th June the Hellingly Lions trekked the same roads to come to Norfolk for the SE Div2 and Youth. The Div 2 match was a close affair resulting in only one point splitting the two teams. Glyn and Paul rode consistently well but Hellingly ended up victorious with 80 points to our 79. The Youth match wasn’t quite such a close affair as Hellingly stormed to victory with 91 points to our 68. The score did not reflect how well the young Hawks rode and the team manager did a great job with the pairings and trying out new things. Hugo and Ronnie rode some excellent races together and Arlo and Austin did well to pick themselves up after both crashing. Fast forward a couple of years and this team will be a force to reckon with! Referee, Paddy Wenn, did a great job battling the wind to keep the matches running smoothly.

The Norfolk Championships were held at Spixworth on Saturday 15th June. The sky was grey, the clouds were stormy but the riders and supporters were optimistic – it is June after all! The U8’s and Veterans kicked off proceedings with Jax emerging victorious for the U8’s with Etta and Levi 2nd and 3rd. Dave was 3rd and Rory 4th in the Veterans. The rain came down for the U13’s and U19’s but they carried on regardless. Umbrellas were hurried down to the pits and theraces reduced to 3 laps meant that these categories were completed.

U13’s….3rd – Luca, 4th – Frank, 5th – Lola, 7th – Austin, 8th – Ronnie, 9th – Arlo,10th – Micael

U19’s….3rd – Lola,4th – Amelia

The deluge of rain that hammered down just after the presentation cleaned allthe mud off the bikes and riders but meant that the U10’s, U16’s, Ladies and Open will take place at Hethersett on 10th July. Many thanks to Shaun and Jamie
for refereeing and Gary and Jack for doing the pits and flags/tapes. We will all be taking tips from Jamie and bringing full waterproofs next time!

Sunday 16th June was another SE Div 2 and Youth and Great Blakenham. Theweather could not have been more different and once the Hawks became accustomed to something that the people in Suffolk call ‘sun’, the points cameaplenty with the Hawks winning both matches. The Div 2 match finished 85-72 with Aiesha scoring well in her first team match of the season. The Youthsstormed theirs, winning 97-63 with great consistency all round and Frank beingnamed rider of the match by the manager.

The Hawks are next in action at Eaton Park on Wednesday 19th June for R4 of theNorfolk Series. Tapes up at 7pm
