NEWS: Hawks welcome the Velo Club

Hethersett Hawks /Swinton & Co Cycle Speedway Club played host to members of the Hethersett Velo Club on Thursday night.

The Velo Club was formed just over two years ago and now boasts over 170 memberts who are engaged in both serious and social road riding. Club Secretary Bart Anderson brought along 10 other members and they had a whale of a time and all admitted how scary it was and the safety fence was tested on occasions!

There was some cycle speedway heritage on view with two Velo Club members showing they had raced before – Colin Harvey rode for Norwich Stars at Hellesdon in the 1980s and Matt Hardy was a former Castle Donington and Leicester rider.  Also taking part were David Slater, brother to multi-Norfolk Champion Darren, and Sam Whiting, son of former Hawk Simon “Nitro” Whuting.

After a demo and practice a 12-heat competition led to A, B and C Finals with Matt Hardy the best of the bunch. The evening ended with a 5-a-side relay race and a promise to come back next year – and who knows a couple of recruits for the Hawks’ Veterans side!
