NEWS: A&T’s Phillips makes Liverpool FC first team debut
Astley & Tyldesley’s ace cycle speedway rider Adam Phillips has long combined being successful at both cycle speedway and football. The 16 year old first turned out for A&T as a four year old and since then has won three British Individual titles, as well as starring for A&T’s first team. Last year saw Adam become an established member of the Liverpool FC u-18 Academy team, as well as captaining the England football team at u-16 level. In view of this progress at football, it was Adam’s intention that this cycle speedway season would be his last, with Adam setting his sights on winning the U-16 British Individual Final next month as his swansong.
However, these plans took a sudden change last week, when Adam was called up into the Liverpool FC first team squad. At just 16, Adam has leap frogged the u-18 Academy squad and made his first team debut, playing the entire second half as a substitute in Denmark against Brondby last week. He is in the USA this week, as a 1st team squad member, on Liverpool’s pre season tour. Clearly this has forced him to bring forward his intention to retire from cycle speedway with immediate effect. Obviously this is a blow for the A&T team, but everyone at A&T wishes Adam every success in his football career and thanks him for being such a pleasant, dedicated and successful club member since he was four years old. Adam’s final appearance for A&T was in the home defeat to Northumbria on 6th July, when he top scored with 19 points out of a possible 20.
